Oral History Analysis
This interview shows that when you are willing to go to another country for any situation, you are going to lose many traditions and culture, because then you must adapt to the culture of that country and the traditions. Many people who have had to leave their country have lost all their culture and customs because there must be circumstances that will not allow them to return to their country. They accept that they must forget about their country and adapt to a new one. At the same time that there are people who forget everything about their culture, there are also people who have not forgotten anything about their country, because they are proud of where they come from and because they hope to return to their country again. Everyone has different expectations of the country from which they need to adapt (in this case the United States), because they think that a life here will change everything for them and they will be able to change what they were suffering in their native country. Although their lifestyle and how they live may change in a positive way, they also suffer from the fact that they will not be able to return to their country for a long time or will not return again. This is the fear of immigrants today, that they will not be able to return to their country or that the same situation in which they were living will continue in their lives. This interview made me understand that not all those who come to another country remain stagnant and that many want to make an effort to be able to move forward and to be able to demonstrate that they are hard-working people who make an effort for their family. Before this interview I didn't know how my father felt after traveling to this country, but with this interview it gave me perspective on how he felt. He made me understand that there will always be problems in this life and that sometimes things don't go the way you want, but even if they don't go the way you want, you must trust the process and move forward. He helped me to understand how he adapted more to this culture because he had already experienced something similar when he traveled to London for the first time. He went to London because he wanted to help his family and especially his mother. He wanted to get them out of the economic crisis they had at that time. It was difficult at first because he had to be without his family and he had no one to help him with the language. He had to adapt quickly and practice more the language that was spoken, which was English. Many who come to this country have very high expectations because many tell them that the United States is a place of opportunities, that life will get easier and everything will improve. However, when they arrive, their expectations are not similar to reality. This happens because those who come to this country do not have the same opportunities that people here have. In the interview he made me understand that his expectations were more similar to today's reality because he mentioned that he went to another country before coming to the United States. He made me aware that while we have expectations we must know that they will not be as we thought they would be. If we want to change that reality to our expectations, we must make an effort. Something that is mentioned in the interview is the opportunity to travel to your country again. I was a little surprised by his response because I didn't think that he wouldn't want to stay in his native country. When I heard why, it was something that didn't pass through my mind. He said no because right now our country has many conflicts, wars and problems with the government. My dad mentioned that it was a little difficult to adapt to the space, the food and the way of living because it is a very drastic change from how we lived in Ecuador to now that we live in the United States. When you arrive in a new country, it will take time for you to adapt to the lifestyle that is lived in that country. Everything will be different but over time it will be easier to adapt to the food, space and lifestyle. To conclude, it can be said that I learned more about how my dad feels about the issue of migrating to another country. He gave me more knowledge of how adapting to something can be easy or difficult and that even if things don't go the way you want, you must trust the process and always have faith in God.
